Vietnam – North to South

Experience all the best bits of Vietnam: A choice of 15-day or 8-day adventure cruises

15-Day or 8-Day adventure cruising

Don’t miss…

  • The chance to really get to know Vietnam
  • World heritage listed scenic beauty and natural wonders
  • The diverse sense of history and culture
  • An appreciation of the difference between North and South
  • Monasteries, tombs and architecture
  • The remarkable local people
  • Some incredible beaches

15 days really gives you a chance to discover and get to know Vietnam. Make sure you read the day-by-day itinerary as along the miles of beautiful coastline, which most travellers never get to see, we’ll get you close-up and personal with the country, its culture and its people.

It’s a memorable journey from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City. Without forgetting iconic Ha Long Bay, lively Nha Trang and the old town of Hoi An, a lot of the places we take you to are only normally seen by local fishermen! You get the contrast of tiny islands and traditional village life with the likes of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, an unspoiled paradise where tourism is yet to gain a firm footing. This is no fast and furious tourist trip – it’s a slow boat that combines leisure, adventure and a timeless sense of the Orient. Best of all – the shore excursions are included I  n the price!

Sail & Stay Option

Even 15 days might not be quite enough in this amazing country and we’ve discovered some great places to stay in both Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi – you’ve come this far so why not really immerse yourself in the history and culture. Ask about a shore stay when you book.

Your vessel: The M/S Panorama II

Ports of call: Ho Chi Minh City - Phan Tiet - Phan Rang - Nha Trang - Quy Nonh - Ly Sin Islands - Hoi An - Danang

8 Day-by-Day Itinerary

Hanoi

Arrive Hanoi

Good Morning Vietnam! A complimentary arrival transfer is included if you’re arriving today. In the evening, sit down to your first dinner with fellow travellers. Enchanting Hanoi, with its abundance of lakes and parks, is a contrast to its southern counterpart Ho Chi Minh City, with an atmosphere that’s a lot less frantic. You’ll be made welcome.

Included Activities

Welcome Dinner

Special Information

A complimentary arrival transfer will be provided if you arrive today, or if you arrive earlier and have booked with Peregrine to stay at the joining hotel.

Halong Bay

Halong Bay

Early morning walking tour, including ‘laughing yoga’, tai chi and other lakeside activities along with the locals, for those who like to get up and about. It’s a great first taste of everyday life in Vietnam. For another traditional highlight we visit is a water puppet theatre where our host Liem invites us into his home. Here a small-scale theatre continues a long running family tradition, passed down from generation to generation. As well as the show we’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at how the puppets are made and animated. At 2 pm a bus transfers us from Hanoi to Halong to board the Panorama II.

Included Activities

  • Local Lunch
  • Hanoi – Old Quarter Tour
  • Hanoi – Local water puppet performance
Halong Bay

Halong Bay

Halong Bay is breath-taking, and we discover the glorious views of its World Heritage-listed beauty and its pretty limestone islands in a small boat. Kayaking along the bay is another great option.

Included Activities

  • Halong Bay boat tour
  • Kayaking from the Panorama II  (Optional and free)

Special Information

Please note – local laws require that we have a security guard on board our boat at all times during our time in the Halong Bay area.

Lan Ha Bay

Halong Bay & Lan Ha Bay

A day to chill out cruising and get to know your shipmates as we head south towards Hon Lang, located just north of Na Trang. Relax with a drink, play some board games, or simply curl up on a comfortable chair on deck with a good book (and your camera) as the glorious coast streams b

Phong Nha National park

Hon La & Phong Nha National park

Early arrival and breakfast, then we have a short road trip to the unspoiled Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. Here Asia’s most ancient limestone karst landscapes span 885 square kilometres and many consider this chunk of land to be one of the last true paradises of Vietnam. That said the 31 kilometre-long Thien Duong cave (aka Paradise Cave), is also something rather special – amazingly it was only discovered in 2005. We lunch out locally in a restaurant in Phong Nha. Overnight we sail for Vinh Moc, departing at midnight.

Included Activities

  • Phong Nha National Park Visit
  • Thien Duong Caves Visit
  • Lunch
Khe Sanh

Vin Moch and Khe Sanh

It’s another day with time spent underground but this is really something else. The network of tunnels at Vinh Moc were built to shelter local communities in the Demilitarised Zone that separated North and South Vietnam during the war. The network grew in sophistication and depth, and many families resided in this underground village in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, with 17 children born. We also visit Khe Sanh Combat Base, site of the bloodiest conflict of the Vietnam-America conflict.

Included Activities

  • Vinh Moc Tunnel site visit
  • Khe Sanh Combat Base visit
Hoi An

Hue

Docking at Chan May, we transfer by road to Hue, the former imperial capital and hub of Vietnam’s historic past. We split up into smaller groups for a tour of the city with local guides, including a visit to an active Buddhist monastery that dates back to 1601 at the Thien Mu Pagoda where we’re offered a tasty vegetarian lunch. Then it’s on to the elaborate royal tomb of Emperor Tu Duc, with its beautiful lake, frangipani and pine trees. Later, re-board the Panorama II and head for Danang.

Included Activities

  • Vegetarian lunch at Hue Pagoda
  • Guided Walking Tour of Hue
Danang

Danang

With a free day in the seaside town of Danang, enjoy some swimming, snorkelling, kayaking or paddle-boarding. Perhaps head ashore to explore the town, which is developing fast but not without some of its original charm intact. Perhaps visit the Ho Chi Minh Museum to read up on the revered revolutionary leader or take a stroll to the impressive Dragon Bridge

Special Information

No departure transfer is included onward from the Peregrine

The Weather

Viet Nam is located in both a tropical and a temperate zone. It is characterized by strong monsoon influences, but has a considerable amount of sun, a high rate of rainfall, and high humidity. Regions located near the tropics and in the mountainous regions are endowed with a temperate climate.

In spring, March and April have the lowest rainfall across all destinations and temperatures are pleasant, though still cool in the far north. The temperatures are more moderate and rainfall is lighter.

Hoi An

Hoi An

Hoi An started life as a Cham port town but, by dint of being visited by a myriad of traders from various cultures over the ages, it has become a cosmopolitan entrepôt. There’s a distinctly Chinese feel to it with pagodas and assembly halls scattered along the small lanes and charming tiled houses.  It’s a delightful and tranquil place to stroll around in small groups with a local guide or see on a bike ride. We can also arrange an optional cookery class and learn how to make Spring Rolls. After dinner, overnight at sea.

Included Activities

  • Hoi An City Tour
  • Bike Tour – optional (free)
Dao Ly Son Islands

Dao Ly Son Islands

Dao Ly Son Island, a bit south of Danang, is an area famous for garlic production (could be the French influence?), has a lovely shoreline and is great cruising country. We’ll be checking out the coastal beaches today and making time for swimming off the Panorama II, as well as kayaking, snorkelling and stand-up paddle-boarding. Lunch on board today

Included Activities

  • Snorkelling
  • Kayaking from the Panorama II
Quy Nonh

Quy Nonh

It’s history and culture to start the day as we visit the Warlord Museum dedicated to Quang Trung, the Emperor who ruled here in the late 1700s and was a forerunner to the Vietnamese nationalist movement. You’ll see a Tay Son martial arts demonstration, and check out the nearby Twin Cham Towers, some of the largest in South East Asia. Finally we hit the beach to see local fisherman in their traditional basket boats. We dine onboard the Panorama II while sailing north.

Included Activities

  • Quang Trung (Warlord Museum) Visit
  • Twin Cham Towers Visit
  • Snorkelling
  • Kayaking from the Panorama II
Quy Nonh

Nah Trang

Vietnam was once a French colony and Nha Trang is often know as the ‘Cannes of the Orient’. The bay and beach here are great and there is a truly cosmopolitan seaside atmosphere. We take you on a morning walking tour to show you the Ponaga Cham tower and the marine life and fishing culture on display at the Ocean Institute. Your afternoon is at leisure – why not spend it on the beach?

Included Activities

  • Nha Trang City Tour
Phan Rang to Nha Trang

Phan Rang

A short road trip from Phan Rang takes us to the bustling beachside town of Nha Trang where in around 1400 BCE King Jaya Simhavarman III constructed the grand Po Klong Garai Cham Towers, an imposing work of architecture. Next we go to Bau Truc, to meet traditional pottery makers at the oldest pottery village in South East Asia. It’s most definitely souvenir time and you’ll have chance to compare your wares back on board.

Phan Tiet

Phan Tiet

Star of the show today is the biggest reclining Buddha in Vietnam – he’s nearly 50m long and 11m high and lives a laid-back life in the Linh Son Truong Pagoda, reached by cable car. Next on the agenda it’s Fairy Spring, a lovely waterfall, and the dunes of Mui Ne, an amazing quirk of geology much loved as a sand-sledding destination (you might be happy just to take photos!).  It all very lovely. We depart at 4.00 for an overnight sail.

Included Activities

  • Cable Car to Linh Son Truong Tho Pagoda
  • Fairy Spring Falls & Sand Dunes Visit at Mui Ne

Flights London to Ho Chi Minch , Hanoi and Da Nang to London

Flights are not included in the tour cost, however we can assist with booking these.

Intrepid has partnerships with many of the major airlines, which means we can get you the best price on flights for your intended travel dates. We know it can sometimes be challenging to organise flights – and some destinations are harder than others – which is why we can assist with negotiating dates, transfers and prices. Speak to us about how we can help.

As cruising is a heavily weather-dependent activity, which can cause delays in returning to port, we recommend allowing an additional night at the end of the trip to ensure nobody misses any onward flights.
