It’s Time To Re-Evaluate Greek Wine

The truth is that it’s actually long past time to re-evaluate Greek wines. Forget Greek taverna wine, we’re talking about the Premier Cru of Hellenic wines. Cuvees that you never see, simply because they never leave Greece. (Greek connoisseurs drink them all). Bottles that, if you can find them in a wine shop., cost upwards of 30 or 40 euro.

A Tutored Tasting By A True Industry Great

Don’t take our word for it because the man who has put this cruise together, the palate that has selected the wineries, the wines, the wine-pairings at supper and the vintages, is none other than Tim Clarke. Tim is rightly a legend when it comes to Greek wines. A true guru of Hellenic viticulture, Tim and his wife Lynette Arblaster have been champions of ‘oenology’ of Greek winemaking on both the mainland and the islands for more than 30 years.

A Gastronomic Extravaganza

On this tutored cruise Tim will cover Greek winemaking from the classical age through to the present day. He will take you to wine estates for tastings and lunch. He will discuss differences between soils on the islands and the mainland, and the grape varieties which thrive there. He will identify the differentiating factors of wine production and how that has changed.

A Feast Of Wines

To embark on this journey of exploration, you need to be prepared for the fact that every day you will taste multiple wines. There will be tastings in the morning, tastings over lunch, tastings most afternoons and paired tastings with food at dinner. Tim has also worked with our master chef to ensure the food matches the wines he has chosen to offer.

Ports of call: Hydra - Naflio- Nemea - Monemvasia - Milos - Santorini - Samos

The Weather

Reliable sunshine is virtually guaranteed during the season between early May and late October, with temperatures ranging from the low 20’s in early and late season up to the mid to high 30’s from late June until August. Winds are predictable with moderate winds (Force 3-4) from the NW.

What’s on tim’s wine list?

Your vessel: the elegant Star Flyer

Star Clipper and Star Flyer are as fleet as the wind and as graceful as swans.

These are true clipper ships reflecting their proud heritage in every inch of their polished brass and gleaming brightwork. Step aboard these unique vessels and discover a new age of sail, where the traditions of the past are happily married to the comforts and amenities of the present day. Star Clipper and Star Flyer are modern cruise ships in every way, created for luxury-loving passengers who also love the traditions and romance of the legendary era of sailing ships. Star Clipper and Star Flyer are both 360 feet long and each carries just 170 guests in pampered comfort.

Life aboard is blissfully relaxed, much like traveling on a private yacht. You’ll never feel confined on Star Clipper or Star Flyer. Each ship offer spacious accommodations and expansive teak decks with ample space and not one, but two swimming pools. In fact, you’ll find that these ships offer more outdoor space per passenger than most conventional cruise ships.

The décor of  Star Flyer is reminiscent of the grand age of sail. Antique prints and paintings of famous sailing ships please the eye, while teak and gleaming mahogany rails are richly reminiscent of Star Clippers’ proud nautical heritage.

As the name suggests, Star Flyer is both a shining example to other ships of her kind and a vessel that cuts through the water with all the grace of a bird in full flight, she offers her own style and character to anyone who steps aboard.

With amble outdoor space for a full capacity of 170 guests and sizeable cabins, complete with all the mod-cons, you will never feel cramped aboard this excellent ship. In fact, because we abolish any rigid schedules or clothing and dining restrictions, you will feel as liberated as ever as the salty sea breeze rushes through your hair.

The resplendent décor is appropriately finished with paintings of famous ships which again reflect the vintage nautical nature of this wonderful vessel, and the teak decks along with the warm mahogany rails complement everything perfectly.

Tahiti & The Islands Of French Polynesia

Few words are more evocative of Pacific Island cruising than ‘Tahiti’ – thanks to great French painter Paul Gaugin we can immediately conjure up images of coconut palms and grass skirts. Yet Thaiti is just one of the treasures on offer.

This wonderful South Pacific archipelago is dotted with islands sculpted by sky-piercing, moss-green peaks and lined with vivid turquoise lagoons. Island-hopping in a small ship is the only way to see every landscape, from geometric ridges strung with waterfalls on the high islands to flat, desert-like atolls where lagoons far outsize the landmass. As you will discover there are many sides to

The Islands of Tahiti but, as any local will tell you, they are all connected by ‘Mana’ – the life force and spirit at the very soul of French Polynesia.. From the moment you arrive here, you will be embraced by it

A Choice Of Two Itineraries – 12 Day Or 8 Day

Tahiti is half-a-world away in every respect so, having come this far, we think it’s only sensible to give you a choice of itineraries, along with the option to extend your visit with a land stay (see below). The only way to see these islands is by boat and, to make the most of your adventure, we recommend the 12 days cruise – that way you get to enjoy the full flavour of the archipelago.

The 8 days cruise is ideal if you’re tighter for time, or for those who want to make sure they see the beauty of the islands but also get chance to spend some time on shore ‘living the Polynesian dream’.

12 Days In The South Pacific

Our 12 days cruise follows a similar journey around the Society Islands as the 8 days cruise, but also ventures north to explore the many small ‘atolls’ of the Tuamotu Islands. This is one of the most enchanting areas of the South Pacific, if not the world, much beloved by famous French oceanographer Jacques Cousteau for its lagoons and marine life.

Ports of Call – Papeete port/Tahiti, Society Islands | Bora Bora, Society Islands | Taha'a, Society Islands | Raiatea, Society Islands | Huahine, Society Islands | Tetiaroa, Society Islands | Tikehau, Tuamotu Islands | Ahe, Tuamotu Islands | Rangiroa, Tuamotu Islands | Rangiroa, Tuamotu Islands | Moorea, Society Islands | Papeete port/Tahiti

The Weather

In French Polynesia, a vast archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean, the climate is tropical, influenced by the south-east trade winds, with a hot and humid season from November to April and a cooler season from May to October. The hot season is also the rainiest, in addition, from December to April, there’s the risk of cyclones (except on the Marquesas Islands). The temperatures vary little throughout the year, but they are high on the northern islands and gradually cooler as you move to the south.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Papeete, Tahiti

Papeete, Tahiti

Embarkation 14.30 to 16.00 followed by an afternoon departure to Bora Bora – welcome cocktails and dinner will be served at sea!

Bora Bora

Bora Bora

Bora Bora is possibly the most photographed place on earth and any visit is a once in a lifetime dream. Panorama II cruises into Bora Bora lagoon, with Mount Otemanu standing tall in the centre, to begin 2 days spent in paradise. Whilst here we offer a variety of optional activities such as the 4×4 Bora Bora Cultural Tour, the Snorkeling with Stingrays and Sharks excursion, the Open-air Lagoon Aquarium experience, the Bora Bora tour by ‘le Truck’ and more. We spend the night at anchor.

Bora Bora - Taha'a

Bora Bora – Taha’a

This morning we continue our Bora Bora activities. After lunch we cruise the Bora Bora lagoon and sail to Taha’a, making an early afternoon arrival at this true botanical paradise. The fertile valleys and sloping hillsides are covered with banana, watermelon and coconut groves, whilst the island also acts as an immense natural greenhouse for the highly prized Tahitian vanilla orchid. Our optional half-day Taha’a Island Adventure excursion allows you to explore the beautiful interior of Taha`a by 4×4 and discover the luxurious tropical vegetation. We have a tasting of local fruit and get breath-taking views of the magnificent turquoise bay of Haamene. This excursion also includes a visit to the pearl farm and a traditional vanilla plantation. In the afternoon we make time for swimming and snorkelling from a Motu – a reef surrounding an atoll. Overnight at anchor.

Raiatea

Raiatea

Today we sail inside the lagoon to reach nearby Raiatea, which translates to ‘faraway heaven’ and once the cultural and religious centre of the Society Islands. Known in legends as Hawaiki, ‘the homeland’, many believe that this is where the great Polynesian migration began and the island remains a place of pilgrimage today. Our optional excursion will start by exploring the Faaroa River, French Polynesia’s only navigable river, by kayak with an expert guide leading the way through Raiatea’s verdant interior. Then, we visit the ancient marae temple at Taputapuatea, a recent UNESCO World Heritage Site, and learn about its Polynesian origins and historical relevance. Lunch is a locally-inspired picnic before we return to Panorama II for dinner and overnight in the lagoon.

Raiatea - Huahine

Raiatea – Huahine

We weigh anchor and sail to Huahine, once home of Tahitian royalty and considered as the cradle of Polynesian culture. The island maintains the largest concentration of ancient marae (temples) in French Polynesia, some of which are believed to date back to the original ancestors of the Tahitians, the Lapita people, around 700 AD. Huahine is an immense tropical jungle thriving with coconut plantations, vanilla orchids, banana groves, breadfruit trees and watermelon fields. Our optional half-day tour takes us by 4×4 vehicle around the island to visit Fare, then the archaeological site and a vanilla plantation at Maeva, before going to see and feed the sacred blue-eyed eels of Faie. An optional full-day excursion is also available including a land 4×4 tour plus a boat excursion including a visit to a pearl farm and a picnic. Overnight at sea to Tetiaroa.

Tikehau

Makatea

The island of Makatea is like no other found in French Polynesia. It is not a coral atoll but rather a raised island of coral. The limestone cliffs tower over the coast and the island’s interior shows significant vegetation, complete with a few species of endemic birds and a peculiar expanse of limestone holes. Today, this sleepy but spectacular island is home to three species of threatened endemic birds: the beautiful Makatea fruit dove, the impressive imperial pigeon, and the comely appearing singer extraordinaire, the reed warbler. Our half day optional tour will take us across this unique island to a magnificent beach with rockpools to explore before we visit an incredible grotto. Swimming deeper inside the grotto, this underwater cave system will slowly open out to reveal a spectacular watery cathedral, full of weird and wonderful stalagmites and stalactites. Late afternoon departure to Rangiroa. Overnight at sea.

Rangiroa

Morning arrival in Rangiroa, the largest atoll in the Tuamotu Archipelago and one of the largest in the world. One of the best destinations for scuba diving, Rangiroa is composed of 240 islets, more than 110 miles, encompassing a deep lagoon. Our optional excursion will take us to the Blue Lagoon, a natural pool formed by islets and reefs within the central lagoon. At only 16 feet deep, the Blue Lagoon is an ideal location for swimming, snorkeling, and observing the vast assortment of marine life. Enjoy a traditional Polynesian picnic before returning to the ship. Overnight at anchor.

Rangiroa – Tikehau

Early morning sailing and arrival at Tikehau also called the Pink Sand Island. This small atoll consists of countless tiny white and pink sand islets engulfed in coconut groves and hidden alcoves. In Tikehau, which actually means “peaceful landing,” you will find nothing but absolute serenity on her calm and graceful shores. The lagoon, formed by an almost unbroken ring of continuous coral, resembles an immense natural swimming pool. This underwater aquarium is teeming with marine life. According to the legendary marine researcher Jacques Cousteau, it has a higher concentration of fish than any other lagoon in French Polynesia. Our optional walking tour will take us to one of the family-owned fish farm where they trap different species of fish in a maze of underwater fencing. Much of their catch is then shipped to Papeete and sold at the local markets. We will visit Tuherahera at the southern side where most locals live, leaving the remainder of the atoll virtually untouched. In fact, the northeastern quarter is mostly uninhabited. Naturally adorned with colorful flowers such as hibiscus and bougainvillea, Tuherahera is one of the most attractive villages in the Tuamotu Atolls. Afternoon sailing to Tetiaroa.

Tetiaroa – Mo’orea

A haven for birds, sea turtles and all kinds of marine life, Tetiaroa is treasured among Tahitians who know it as a sacred place. So sacred, that at one time the coconut-dotted white sand beaches and crystalline lagoon of this uninhabited atoll was an exclusive getaway for Tahitian royalty. It’s not surprising that actor Marlon Brando fell under its spell during the filming of “Mutiny on the Bounty” in 1960 and later went on to become its owner. Under his direction a luxury eco-resort was designed and it operates in 100 % sustainable manner. We will spend the morning on this charming island, exploring the lagoon and snorkeling in its crystal clear waters. Enjoy an optional guided walking tour to the islet of Tahuna Iti, the Birds’ Island. The islet shelters one of the largest colony of birds in Tahiti and is a national reserve for seabirds, frigates, sterns, phaetons (straw tails), brown gannets and other petrels. Afternoon sailing and evening arrival at Moorea.

Mo’orea

Mo’orea is believed to be the inspiration for the mythical Bali Hai from James Michener’s Tales of the South Pacific. Eight gargantuan mountain peaks rise from its magnificent lagoon, creating a distinctive silhouette visible from the western coast of Tahiti. Morning and afternoon optional half day excursions; a/ a Snorkeling and ray tour b/ a Nature & Culture Tour taking you to admire magnificent views in the interior of the island. Tonight we will enjoy our Farewell Dinner. Overnight at anchor.

Papeete, Tahiti

Papeete, Tahiti

Early morning sailing to Tahiti. Morning arrival in Papeete. Disembarkation at 9:00 am after breakfast.

8 Day Cruise

A round trip cruise that starts and ends in Tahiti, 8 days giving you just enough time to really experience the awesome beauty of French Polynesia’s world-famous Society Islands. Small ship cruising is by far the best way to island-hop through these beautiful turquoise lagoons and allows you to see every landscape, from geometric ridges strung with waterfalls on the high islands to flat, desert-like atolls where lagoons far outsize the landmass.

Costa Rica & Panama Cruise

Categories:

9 And 11 Night Package Holidays, Or 7 Night Cruises, To Explore The Pacific Coast Of Costa Rica And Panama

What you’ll see on the cruise…

  • Rainforest high canopy walk
  • Historical colonial Spanish forts
  • The Pearl Islands
  • Dug-out canoe ride through mangrove swamps
  • Corcovado National Park
  • Wonderful tropical flora and fauna
  • Panama City
  • Transit of the Panama Canal

Close Up And Personal Tropical 7 Night Cruises

This itinerary, which cruises up the Costa Rica coast one week and down the Costa Rica coast the next, is a wonderful potpourri of National Parks. We talking about real-life tropical jungle brimming with amazing bird and animal life, lovely beaches, and off-the-beaten-track ports of call. Under the guidance of our onboard naturalist, we promise to get you up-close and personal, to the extent of even taking you for a walk along trails high in the rain forest canopy. The transit of the Panama Canal and Panama City itself offer an amazing contrast.

The Very Best In Pacific Coastal Cruising

If the words ‘Pacific Coastal Cruising’ don’t make the heart of any cruise fan beat a little faster then we’re not sure what will. Cruising in Costa Rica and Panama is a fairly unknown area for British visitors and still relatively undeveloped. That means we can use the term ‘exotic’ with little fear of contradiction.

What you get on land…

This itinerary sails on alternate weeks from Panama City to Puntarenas Port in Costs Rica then Puntarenas Port back to Panama City so you can opt to chose our inclusive package with a land stay in both Costa Rica Panama spending time in both to enjoy the contrast.

 Panama City:

  • 1 night B&B 4 star hotel stay in Panama City center
  • The Panama Canal, historic Casco Viejo and Miraflores
  • A modern city full of restaurants and nightlife

Costa Rica:

  • 3 nights B&B 4-star hotel stay in the rain forest
  • Walk the rain forest trails at over 1,600m altitude
  • Stunning flora and fauna

A Different Cruise Experience

All in all, it’s a very interesting sort of cruising, with a spirit of true exploration close to nature under the guidance of our resident naturalist on board, plus the transit of the Panama Canal itself and the modern attractions of Panama City. Our standard package includes 4 nights ashore, but we can tailor-make a longer package to your requirements

Ports of Call: Panama City - Gatun Lake - Granita De Oro Island - Coiba Island - Golfo Dulce - Puerto Jimenez - Playa Biesanz - Curu - Tortuga Island - Puntarenas Port (Costa Rica)

The Weather

Costa Rica and this part of the Pacific coast in general have an average temprature of 20C to 28C. Due to the proximity to the equator, there is no real summer or winter. It does however have a rainy season from May to November.

Optional: Cruise & Stay

Whilst most cruises tend to be ‘round-trips’ this is more of a road trip by the sea! You get two very different countries, seeing a variety of cultures, architecture and history. At the same time, you’ll get great natural beauty and some stunning beaches. It’s a trip with a sense of purpose, with the added value of not just one, but two wonderful and extremely contrasting places in which to choose to spend a few extra days – one a bustling modern city, the other at the charming Chayotte Lodge amidst the high rain forest. Our cruise & stay package offers both, one pre-cruise and one post-cruise, and it makes for the most wonderful 11 night holiday. But if you would like to stay longer and do more, we would be happy to create a tailor-made package for you.

The Islands of Cape Verde Cruise

Categories:

The archipelago of Cape Verde welcomes you with a mixture of African and Portugese heritage

Don’t miss…

  • Vibrant Santiago
  • The old capital of Cidade Velha
  • Fogo Volcano
  • Island tranquillity
  • San Nicolau – the coffee island
  • The art and culture of Mindelo
  • Old Portuguese Maio

A long-time Portuguese colony sitting deep into the Atlantic off the coast of West Africa, the island now known as Santiago was originally settled to be used as a slave trading outpost. Over time the other islands of this volcanic archipelago were inhabited and, today, the Cape Verde Islands offer a spellbinding blend of African and Portuguese influences in their architecture, food, customs and traditions.

With a pleasant year-round climate, this island chain offers a diverse range of landscapes from verdant mountain ranges, lush hills and jungles, volcanic landscapes or wide deserted beaches. The harbours and towns are extremely welcoming to visitors – they don’t get many! It’s still a comparatively undiscovered, natural and fresh sort of place and long may that last, we say. All things considered, this is a journey that will open up a vibrant and colourful world, all set against the gentle rhythms of West African music.

Cruise and Stay - Hilton Cabo Verde Sal Resort

The islands of the Cape Verde archipelago are famous for their tropical beaches – to our mind every bit as impressive as those you’ll find in the Caribbean. They don’t get more drop-dead gorgeous than the extravagant expanse of sand you find at the southern tip of Sal in the village of Santa Maria. It is exactly the place you would expect to find an upscale hotel like a Hilton and this one has everything you need to kick back, chill out and get into the holiday mood pre-cruise. Between the sea, the beach and the beach bar you probably won’t spend much time in the rooms, but they are modern, large and very comfortably appointed with pool or ocean views. The hotel has three restaurants offering a mix of local and international cuisine, a pool bar, a beach bar and an indoor bar which features cocktails and local musicians every evening. Get lucky in the casino and you might pay for your holiday! If you want to check out the island, features like the Vivero Botanical Gardens are only a short cab ride away.

An Island - Hopping Voyage Of Discovery Through The Seychelles Archipelago

Don’t miss…

  • Translucent island waters
  • The amazing natural beauty
  • Stunning snorkelling
  • Centuries-old rain forests
  • Wonderful wild-life
  • Brilliant bird life and giant tortoises
  • ‘Coco de Mer’ palm trees

The perfect destination to experience a unique island-hopping voyage

You need a small craft with a comparatively shallow draft to best explore these waters where every next stop is a little further away from life’s beaten track than the last. So, a small ship is the ultimate way to really discover the unspoilt 115-strong archipelago of the Seychelles, hopping from island to island, visiting places which will captivate your senses with their amazing and unique flora and fauna. It’s a little taste of paradise.

Let’s be honest this is an entirely different sort of world where life is as fascinating and unusual below the water as it is above, and every secluded beach is a private paradise. The islands themselves, with curious names like ‘Curieuse’, pretty much protected from the world at large, are little lands that time forgot. If you’re looking to escape from the humdrum of the workaday world, or simply the dismal damp UK winter, this is the place to visit.

The dining room is located on the upper deck and is a spacious area surrounded with large windows, and can accommodate all clients in one seating. Enjoy our hospitality and our chef’s superb creations, choosing from a wide variety of international and local dishes.
Pegasus Outdoor Restaurant

Outdoor Restaurant

You can relax in the outdoor shaded restaurant on the aft of the Pegasos. Here you can enjoy ocean-view delightful meals al fresco, weather permitting.
Pegasus Indoor Lounge

Lounge Area

Our friendly, elegant bar is one of the most popular spots on the ship and an ideal setting for personal moments. Talk with your old friends or make new ones over a refreshing drink.

Cruise and Stay - Savoy Resort & Spa

With daily sunshine virtually guaranteed, we recommend you consider extending your stay on the main island of Mahe which boasts some excellent hotels and fine beaches, as well as a unique Creole culture which represents the fusion of influences that have shaped the history of these islands.

We can tailor make these arrangements for you before or after the cruise in a range of properties such as the  5 star Savoy Resort & Spa on the white sand beach of Beau Vallon Bay, arguably the best beach on the island. Add either 3 or 7 nights before or after the cruise and to make things easy, our prices include the transfer between the cruise vessel, the hotel and the airport.
